ChatGPT now works inside Word

You draft in ChatGPT. You paste into Word, and the headings and bullets come out wrong format.

That round trip is over. OpenAI released a ChatGPT add-in for Word on 17 September 2026, and it runs on every plan, including Free.

Now you can ask it to sharpen an argument or rework a section without leaving the file. It can also pull context from Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace and Dropbox.

If you write the same kind of document every week (client memos, research summaries, contract reviews), save your instructions as a skill. It then applies the same standard every time.

Where it breaks: complex tables, charts and formatting can still need a manual fix. It only reads the document you have open and the chat does not show in your ChatGPT history.

Same account, same models, same person asking, then why three different places to choose?

Claude went the other way. On 16 September Anthropic merged Chat and Cowork into one conversation.

The toggle under the message box goes away. You type what you need, and Claude decides whether that is a reply, a document, a deck, or a longer job.

A friend of mine picked that same day to start learning the difference between the two.

My take: we should not have had that choice. A question and a job are the same person talking to the same models.

You do give up the explicit pick. Claude decides now, and you find out from what it hands back. Your approval settings still control how far it goes on its own.

Nothing moves out from under you. Your chats, projects, connectors, skills and files carry over, and you do nothing to keep them.

That same 16 September change brought Claude Docs. I tested it on Sunday.

This weekend I typed 5 characters in front of my notes. /docs.

Claude opened a document next to the chat. Headings, a budget table, real dates.

I usually do that part myself. AI writes the draft, then I copy it, paste it into Word, fix the headings, save, email it, get the edits back, and paste them into the chat.

AI does 1 step. I do 7.

I used to treat that last stretch as my job.

Claude Docs and Claude Slides started rolling out on 16 September to Pro and Max. Anthropic says Team and Free come later.

Claude could already download a Word or PowerPoint file. That path still works, and it is on Free.

The document now stays beside the chat. You fix one line in place, then export once.

I tested it on 20 September with a campaign brief. 5 steps worked.

1. Ask for the document. Type /docs, then what you need, then paste your notes under it.

Claude also built a document without /docs. The command only makes your intent clear.

2. Read it. Claude did not ask me any questions first. It wrote the full brief next to the chat.

3. Change one sentence. Select it, click Comment, type @Claude and your change.

I asked for a shorter main message. It cut the sentence from 7 words to 5, gave its reason in the comment, and left everything else alone.

4. Export it. Click Share, then the Export tab. My tab showed Word, PDF, Markdown, Google Docs and Notion.

The Word file kept the headings, the bullets and the tables.

5. Make slides if you need them. I typed "Turn this document into a 5-slide presentation."

I clicked a title, typed a new one, and downloaded PowerPoint and PDF. The PowerPoint opened as an editable deck.

I never asked Claude to check my numbers. It checked them anyway.

"$12,000 ÷ 400 leads = $30," it wrote. My limit was under $30 a lead, so the plan had no margin.

Later it found that email came to about $43 a lead.

That check was for that draft only. Charts in a Claude Doc do not update on their own, so ask again when your numbers change.

On my screen I could not share a live document publicly, and the invite path was blocked. Anthropic's help page says a shared Doc still needs a Claude account to open.

So do not send a client the Claude link and hope. Export the file, then send the file.

A Claude Doc has no version history yet. If you delete it, it is gone, and there is no trash.

Gemini's Canvas built the same brief on a free Google account, and it exports to Google Docs.
