📡 Why I pay for both ChatGPT and Claude
⚡ The 2 handoffs I use every week, with copy-paste prompt

Before you read: new AI models come out every few weeks, and people rush to switch. This issue is slower. It comes from using both tools since 2024, on all kinds of work, and watching which one does each job well, week after week. That's how I made my split. You can make yours the same way.

2023

Your boss said "use AI more" but never said how.

On the walk home, you finally get an idea for where. You open ChatGPT voice and start talking.

You stop for 2 seconds to think. It cuts in and praises the idea like a new intern. (Even the bad ones.) Then it asks, "What would you like to do next?"

Next morning you ask it for an email. It starts with "I hope this message finds you well!"

If that's you, you're in good company. That was me.

📡 I thought I was the problem

Every bad answer felt like my fault. My prompts weren't detailed enough. Colleagues kept telling me "write better prompts."

So I collected them. Folders of prompt templates, example answers for it to copy, custom instructions. All of it to stop ChatGPT from cutting corners.

And I still spent 5 minutes de-ChatGPT-ing every email before I could send it.

Maybe you have a folder like that too. Saved posts, bookmarked prompts. You keep collecting, the answers stay average, and you start to think you're bad at AI.

Then I pasted that same folder into Claude.

The day I shouted

It was Claude Sonnet 3.5 back then. It wrote in my voice. It followed my rule: "Do not start with a greeting."

I got so angry I shouted. All that prompt-saving, and ChatGPT had just been ignoring me.

I wasn't the only one feeling it. In December 2023, ChatGPT's own account answered users who said GPT-4 was getting "lazier":

Then I tested Claude on a 100-page policy brief. 15 questions. All 15 right, with page numbers. And it didn't flatter me.

So I cancelled ChatGPT.

Then I missed it

Talking to ChatGPT by voice, like a friend. Making images. Web search I could trust. Never hitting a limit.

In Claude, I hit the 5-hour limit 2 to 3 times a week. Then I waited 3 to 4 hours to keep working.

When I looked at what ate my usage, it was jobs ChatGPT does well:

  • writing image prompts, then making the images in Gemini's free plan

  • web searches I didn't trust, so I searched again

  • quick chats about my day and my habits

I was spending Claude's usage on ChatGPT's jobs.

One day I had important work and no usage left. So I paid $20 for extra Claude usage. That's the price of ChatGPT Plus.

So I got ChatGPT Plus back. I've paid for both ever since.

⚡ Personality and precision - 2026

Here's how I think about it now.

ChatGPT has personality. I talk to it when my thoughts are messy, when I'm angry, or when I want ideas and images.

Claude has precision. It writes with me when the words have to be right.

Most of my work starts in one and ends in the other. These are the 2 handoffs I use most.

"Friend jobs" (orange) vs "Precision jobs" (indigo)

1. When a client email makes me angry

First, in a normal text chat, I upload the contract and type:

Write this contract out as it is. Then wait for my next instruction.

Now the full contract sits in the chat. When I switch to voice in that same chat, ChatGPT already knows it, so voice mode stays fast.

⚠️ Check your company's rules before you upload a client contract.

Then I vent:

❝

Okay, I'm honestly losing my mind over this client. Like, they approved the website layout two weeks ago, right? And then just went completely quiet.

Now they've come back saying the whole thing is, completely broken on mobile. And suddenly they want all these animations we never even talked about. By this weekend, apparently. Or they're saying they're not gonna pay the last $3,500.

And I'm just sitting here thinking, are you serious right now? You approved the design. You went quiet for two weeks. And now you're changing the scope and holding my money over my head?

I honestly just wanna tell them to go read their own contract and shove it. I'm so angry right now.

ChatGPT listens like a friend. Then I ask:

Give me the 3 strongest points the client can't deny, from our contract.

In this example, it pulls out:

  1. They approved the design in writing 2 weeks ago.

  2. Mobile animations were never in the signed contract. That's new work.

  3. The contract says the last payment is for the approved design. New work starts after it's paid.

The anger, the fear, the urge to lash out: all gone. What's left are facts I can prove. I check each one before I use it.

Then I give those facts to Claude:

Draft a reply to this client. Keep it calm and firm. Stick to the facts. No emotion, no apology.

ChatGPT lets me be angry. Claude writes the email I won't regret.

⚠️ Claude isn't a lawyer. If real money or a contract is on the line, have someone who knows contracts read it first.

2. When I want to make something

I brainstorm it with ChatGPT voice for about 10 minutes.

Then I open that chat and press Cmd + A to select everything, then Cmd + C to copy. (Ctrl on Windows.) In Claude, I paste it with Cmd + V and add:

Do it in multiple steps. In step one, write text-only content. In step two, create the document. That way you focus on one task at a time.

This stops Claude from splitting its attention and giving a mediocre result. First it writes the words. Then it builds the document. And it knows everything that happened in the chat, and why.

I make a PDF guide this way about every 2 weeks. My last 2:

Your version could be a 1-page plan for your boss or a handout for a client.

This newsletter works the same way too. ChatGPT made the subject line and the images. Claude wrote it with me, from my rough ideas, in my voice.

Built for the unstoppable.

The Dell Pro powered by Intel® Core™ Ultra with Intel vPro® adjusts power usage based on how you work, so your battery life never slows you down.

Not sure which one you need? I made a short quiz with Claude. It tells you if you should switch, stay, or use both.

Good night

Claude is a workaholic. It never wants to stop. It's always ready for what's next, and I've had sleepless nights because of it.

ChatGPT is my friend. I can talk to it, and then say "Good night."

I need both.
