I gave ChatGPT the same file 4 times last month.
Same 40-page PDF. Same 4 steps every time. Open Drive. Download it. Drag it into the chat. Ask my question.
The file was in my Drive the whole time. I've saved everything there for years.
I'd been paying $20 a month for a year. And I was still carrying my own files across by hand.
The 4th time, I stopped halfway through the download. There had to be a simpler way to do this without me in the middle.
So I asked ChatGPT itself.
"Is there a way to have ChatGPT read my GDrive without me doing it manually by opening drive, downloading it and dragging it into chat?"
There is. It reads the file where it already sits, at the moment I ask.
The menu is called Plugins, in Settings.
Connecting took under a minute. Getting used to it took 3 more.
Google Drive and Gmail need Plus or higher.
The directory shows Drive to everyone with a plain +, so you find out it's locked by pressing it.
My colleague checked a free account and a Go account. Both blocked, and Go is a paid plan.
On a free account today: Claude connects Drive and Gmail. ChatGPT gives you Outlook mail, not Google.
There's no syntax to learn. I ask for the file the way I'd ask a person.
That works in all 3. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and on Claude's free plan as well. You can still type @ and pick Drive if you prefer it.
3 I actually use:
"Find all Google Docs containing the word 'AI Signal' in the title that were updated this month."
"Scan the [folder name] folder in my GDrive and list all the PDFs or briefs stored in it."
"Find the spreadsheet titled [sheet name] and extract the total revenue row for Q2."
When a folder holds several versions of the same document, I don't leave the pick to it. I ask twice.
First: "Search my connected Drive for files that have multiple versions like Final, v2, or v3 so I can find the newest one." Then I name the one I want.
Start with the file you keep uploading.
ChatGPT: Settings → Plugins. Claude: Settings → Customize → Connectors.
Read the permission screen before you press Continue. The full list sits behind a small link on it.
Then connect Drive and ask it something about that file you already know the answer to.
Open the file and check. Once.
Gemini took 3 settings before it worked, and none of them are in Gemini. All 3 are in the guide.

Claude took 51%. 69 of you wrote why, and the most common reason for staying with ChatGPT was that it already knows you.
"I'd actually prefer to use Claude but don't want to have to start all the way over, both in learning it and having it learn me."
I asked Grok 4.6 to go and find the same argument in public. X, Reddit, Hacker News, YouGov, Pew and Ramp, July to September. 2 things came back.
You were early on switching cost. Public writing only started naming memory as the lock-in this year. You were already talking that way.
And the internet thinks the question was wrong. The advice through July and August was to buy both $20 plans, or move up to the $100 tier, because Claude's weekly cap is the thing people actually hit. Almost every cancel post is from a Max subscriber, not a Plus one.
One caution on all of it. A search is not a poll, and this list is not the public. Pew has Claude at 6% of US adults against your 51%.
Why I'm opening a room next week
I run a poll in most issues, and a lot of you leave a comment. I answer them myself, one at a time. No bot, ever.
I can't keep up, and I'd rather you could talk to each other than wait on me.
Every issue also ends with 1 thing to do in 5 or 10 minutes. Then I hit send and hope. The room is where that actually gets done, and where doing it once turns into doing it every week.
Most weeks I have 3 stories worth writing and room for 1. The other 2 go in there.
I want to learn from you as much as the other way round.

Yesterday I wanted my community launch checklist. I went straight to Drive, out of habit, before I remembered I don't need to any more.
So I went back to ChatGPT and asked it to find the file. I could have just read it myself in Drive. I did it the new way on purpose, because that's how the new habit sticks.
