You opened ChatGPT to pick up yesterday’s chat. It wasn’t where you left it. The app now had Chat, Work, and Codex, and you first had to work out which one was still normal ChatGPT.
Claude users had their version when Cowork moved into Projects. People who had built their week around it opened the app and found their folders mixed into a screen they already used for something else.
July kept rearranging work people had already set up inside these tools. Every change asked for time you hadn’t planned to spend.
This week I went through roughly 3,000 user comments to find where the work had moved and what helped people get back to it. Then I ran all 21 moves in the checklist myself.

July 9. OpenAI replaced the ChatGPT desktop app with a Chat, Work and Codex client and renamed the old one ChatGPT Classic. If your chats or Projects look gone, search your computer for ChatGPT Classic before you panic. A whole r/ChatGPT thread spent 292 comments finding theirs.
July 7 and 8. Claude's Cowork went to web and mobile, and then the Cowork tab itself got folded into Projects. Users on r/ClaudeAI described finding out by opening the app. Your folders live under Projects now, so look there first.
July 20. Claude Fable 5 stopped counting against Pro plans and moved to pay-per-use credits. Anthropic says Pro users get a one-time $100 credit, and Max keeps Fable inside 50% of its limits. Decide by the work you'd actually give it.
June 30 and July 24. Sonnet 5 became Claude's default and Opus 5 arrived as the strongest pick on Pro. The default change asks nothing of you. Opus eats your usage faster, so save it for jobs that earn it.
July 21. Google shipped Gemini 3.6 Flash for developers while the 3.5 Pro flagship stayed delayed. The Gemini app you use barely changed, so there's nothing to do here.
Copilot had a quiet July in every dataset I read. The change worth your click: Teams meeting organizers can now turn Copilot off per meeting, and the July Windows update lets you remap the Copilot key.
Grok was quiet too. Grok 4.5 landed mid-July on the API side, and if a quota moved under you earlier, the routing fix is in The model map.
August 9 is already scheduled. ChatGPT's Atlas browser shuts down that day. If you still use it, move your bookmarks this week instead of that morning.
🛠️ the setup that survives the next update
One more thing from the agent research, because the internet is loud about it. The X threads I went through turned up zero confirmed cases of ChatGPT Work or Claude Cowork wiping someone's files.
On Facebook and Instagram, people did. A post described 15 years of family photos erased, and a commenter described a client file saved only by a confirm-first setting. Stated fear and real damage are different sizes, and I'm keeping them separate.
So I turned July into 21 moves: portable instructions, a fenced folder for any agent, an overflow tool, a spend ceiling for creators. The moves are mine. I ran all 21 before this went out.

Your lane had the most comment volume of the month. Neill Blomkamp put out a 13-minute short with every shot generated in Seedance 2.0, and his post collected 2,307 replies arguing about it.
The money reality sits lower in the feed. One creator priced Seedance 2.5 at 660 credits, roughly $5, for 30 seconds at 720p. Across the comment sets, the recurring complaint was the bill left after chasing small fixes: reroll one shot 10 times and your $5 shot is a $50 shot.
Working creators kept repeating the same 3 defenses: lock one reference image so faces stop drifting, storyboard before you generate, set a spend ceiling first. All 3 are in the checklist.

Kimi K3's open weights landed July 27, the largest ever released. Before you clear a weekend: one team needed 80 RTX 5090s to serve it.
For you and me the useful version is the free web apps, Kimi, Z.ai, DeepSeek, signed in and treated as overflow. Casual work only. Client files and anything sensitive stay on the tools you already trust.
